THE HAIR OILS GUIDE
Discover the Leonor Greyl Institute's advice
on choosing and applying hair oil.
Why are oils useful?
Hair oil allows you to prepare the hair for shampooing and to ease detangling. Oil also serves to repair, nourish and protect the hair, which makes it an excellent care product and sometimes even means you don't need to use a mask.
How much oil should be applied?
A third of a teaspoon for short hair, half a teaspoon for mid-length hair, a teaspoon for long hair. It is better to apply too little oil than too much. Before bathing, it is recommended that you slightly increase the quantity of oil being applied.
How do you apply a hair oil?
Oils are applied according to hair length, but also to the state of the lengths and ends, as well as the environment in which you live.
To apply an oil, pour it into the palm of your hands and warm it before applying to the lengths and ends. Use a soft boar bristle brush again to make it sink into the hair and to ensure that it does not just remain on the surface.
How do I choose my oil?
It must only contain oil, and on no account silicone; also avoid dry oils, which do not have the same restorative power. You have to choose an oil specially designed for hair and leave aside products dedicated to other uses, such as olive oil. Fine oils such as jojoba oil, for example, can be mixed with sesame oil and avocado oil.
Note that argan oil does not contain sun block. It should therefore be applied and left to act at home, otherwise the hair will be unprotected from UV rays.
More generally, when preparing for sun exposure, it is essential to choose an oil with a protection rating to protect hair texture and color. In the swimming pool or the sea, choose a water-resistant product.
Watch out for oils that are too heavy such as monoi: they tend to make hair greasy.
A little extra: How do I estimate the length of my hair?
Short hair comes to the ears, mid-length hair to the shoulder and long hair past the shoulder.
